Toddler size basics
Every brand sizes a little differently, so the best tool is a tape measure and the brand's own chart. Here is how the sizes generally line up.
| Size | Usually fits | Cut |
| 18 months | About 1 to 1.5 years | Baby cut, room for diapers |
| 24 months | About 1.5 to 2 years | Wider and shorter, room for diapers |
| 2T | About 2 years | Slimmer and longer, for walkers |
| 3T | About 3 years | Toddler cut |
| 4T | About 4 years | Toddler cut |
| 5T | About 5 years | Toddler cut, overlaps kids size 5 |
Ages are rough guides only. For exact height and weight ranges, check each brand's size chart, for example Carter's 24 months vs 2T guide.
How to measure in two minutes
Stand your toddler against a wall without shoes and mark the top of their head for height. Weigh yourself holding them, then subtract your weight. Compare both numbers to the brand chart and pick the size where they land in the middle, not the top.
Quick answers
What size clothes does a 2 year old wear?
Most 2 year olds wear 24 months or 2T, and many move into 3T during the year. Go by height and weight on the brand's size chart instead of age, because brands differ.
What is the difference between 24 months and 2T?
24 months is cut roomier for diapers and is a little shorter, often with snaps. 2T is cut slimmer and longer for a toddler who is walking and potty training. Carter's and Gerber both describe the difference this way on their own size guides.
What does the T mean in toddler sizes?
T stands for toddler. Sizes 2T to 5T are cut for walking children, while month sizes (like 18 or 24 months) are cut for babies in diapers.
Should I size up toddler clothes?
Sizing up one size works for coats, jackets and gifts. Do not size up snug-fit cotton pajamas, which are designed to fit close to the body for safety.
